day 1 – to first cave camp – 2,600m

Day 1 – Saturday 2nd February 2013

The day started with a minibus ride from our hotel in Moshi to the park HQ at Marangu where we signed-in and where Douglas our guide sorted out all the necessary paperwork.  On the journey we stopped to pick up various supplies and enjoyed seeing the bustle of  life in the Tanzanian villages as we passed through on a Saturday morning.  After a couple of hours we finally caught the first glimpse of the famous mountain we had come to conquer.  Even as you look at it from many miles away its hard to imagine the true scale of it.

As we were trekking on the Rongai route we had another couple of hours driving to cover to get round to the starting point up close to the border with Kenya.  Once we had arrived we then settled to eat our lunch as the porters split the gear up and “weighed in”.  It was during lunch that we caught sight of the AK47 carried by the nearby Park Rangers – a mildly disconcerting thing to notice over a sandwich!  We had our photo taken in front of the advice sign before taking the path through the fields, pine forest and eventually tropical forest where we managed to spy a few monkeys.  After about four and a half hours we reached the First Caves camp and enjoyed the views of Kibo and a well earned cup of tea.
